Traveling Atkins Diet Avenue – Is this the Right Weight Loss Route for You?

You see new advertisements for diets every single day. Therefore, sometimes it is hard to keep up with the new dieting trends. Not only that but you also wonder which diets are safe and which ones are not. This applies to the Atkins diet as well.

Some people wonder how to tell if an Atkins diet or similar diet is right diet for them to follow. The best way to know if an Atkins diet is right for you is to ask a health care professional, such as a doctor or dietician. These professionals can fully explain the benefits (and pitfalls) of the Atkins and this will help you determine whether this is the right weight loss plan for you.

Another way to help you decide how helpful the Atkins diet would be for you is to understand the phases of this diet. The phases of the Atkins diet are as follows:

Phase I-The induction phase: There is some variation between the Atkins diet website and the Atkins diet book regarding which foods are acceptable during this stage. However, generally speaking most fish, poultry, shellfish, lean meats (i.e. beef, pork,) and eggs are allowed during this time. Certain cheeses and non-starchy, low-carb vegetables are also allowed during this time, and so are certain sodas and soft drinks. This is the strictest stage of the Atkins diet and this phase usually lasts two weeks. Additionally, this diet usually is the time of most rapid weight loss.

Phase Two-Ongoing Weight Loss: This phase includes a gradual increase of carb intake, starting from five additional grams worth daily. The first increase in carbs is usually in the form of vegetables. Next may be added berries and a variety of other foods with a higher carb count. This phase of the diet usually lasts until the person is about 5-10 pounds from his or her ideal weight.

Phase Three-Pre-Maintenance: During this phase 10 grams of carbs are added to the diet daily. Either that or a larger 20-30 gram carb treat is added. This stage of the Atkins diet involves the intake of more carbs than phase two. This is the stage at which weight loss is the slowest.

Phase Four-Maintenance: This is the stage when you take in the maximum levels of carbohydrates that are appropriate for your body and you continue to eat the rest of the types of prescribed foods for this particular diet. This phase goes on for the life of the person who is on this diet, unless weight is gained and then they would recede to the prior phase.

If your doctor recommends this diet for you and you think it is one you can follow, then you may do well with it. However, if the Atkins diet seems one that you do not think you could follow or your doctor does not recommend it, you may want to reconsider. In most cases, your doctor is likely to see the benefit of this diet.

Another way that you can determine whether this diet is right for you is if you consider the advantages of it. The biggest attraction to this diet is the allowance of otherwise forbidden foods such as steaks, butters, or creams. Not only that but once you have the hang of what foods to eat you do not have to think about counting carbs very much.

You may also want to think of the disadvantages of the Atkins diet before trying it as well. For example, it often is hard to take in the nutrients that your body needs during the induction period. Also, some people have a tendency to have what is called a "Carb Crash" about 3-5 days into the diet. This is when a person starts to feel sick or fatigued due to too low of an intake of carbs.

However, there is an easy solution to the above-mentioned problem. Sometimes a person can just eat a higher carb fruit such as berries or an apple. This will help alleviate the carb crash problem. It is important to remember, also that eating a donut or other sugary food during the induction food-especially during the time of a "carb crash" is not a very healthy thing to do.

The people that this diet seems to be most helpful to are those who run the risk of high blood pressure, high blood sugar count, and so forth. It also is useful for those who are severely obese and who are looking for a head start in weight loss. If you are one of those people this diet could benefit you.
