Attention Deficit Disorder Medication

Though there are some children who are diagnosed with attention deficit disorder who really don’t have it, there are many who do. There seems to be no clear reason why so many have it now, and it is pretty hard to treat. It comes in many forms, and some that have it do not have the hyper part of it while others do. Boys most commonly have ADHD while girls have less severe forms of the condition and many go undiagnosed for a very long time, even into adulthood. Many children are on attention deficit disorder medication and some work better than others.

My youngest brother was diagnosed when he was about eight years old, and he was immediately put on attention deficit disorder medication. This was not a good thing. He had moments when he was violent or threatened violence, so my mom knew that something had to be done. The problem was that the attention deficit disorder medication that he was put on, otherwise known as Ritalin, was very hard on him. Instead of the vibrant and active child we were use to we saw a zombie-like person who wouldn’t eat much and didn’t seem to have any will to so anything he use to enjoy. It broke my mother’s heart.

 Quote of the Day
Psychoanalysis is unlike traditional medicine in that nature does not so readily supply us with a working definition of the psychically “normal.” Our definition of physical normality (”health”)We have to ask ourselves whether medicine is to remain a humanitarian and respected profession or a new but depersonalized science in the service of prolonging life rather than diminishing human suffering.
—Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (b. 1926)

For years they tried to adjust his attention deficit disorder medication to the proper level, but that was harder than it should have been. He came out of his zombie-like state, but then he started to have episodes again. Once changed another time, he started doing better in school but seemed like he had no interest in the world around him. In the end, my mom took him off the attention deficit disorder medication because she couldn’t stand to see him like that. He would always talk about how odd it was that the same medication that made him calm and lifeless was a stimulant for other children, and he was amazed that it became an underground way for teens to get high.

Since those days, there are new attention deficit disorder medications on the market, and they may work better than the original one did. My brother is now over 20 years old, and he no longer suffers from ADHD like he did when he was a child. The good thing about this condition is that it does tend to go away as a child grows up, and by the time they reach adulthood they are calm, cool, and collected adults.
