There seems to be a lot of mystery surrounding health records, and this was even once the subject of a very funny episode of Seinfeld. Though it might seem that a person’s records are something that are filed way from prying eyes, most doctors don’t have a problem sharing what is included in your file. If you are worried about this for some reason, or if you are about to move, there is no reason why you can’t ask your doctor if you can have a peek or even a copy.
Some who travel for a living tend to carry their health records with them. They do this so they always have them on hand if something were to happen. When you are traveling overseas, you can imagine how long it would take for your health records to show up on the other side of the ocean once they are requested by a doctor. This could mean problems with your treatment in some cases. It is actually quite smart to have these with you if you spend a lot of time away from home and on the road for your job.

...I am who I am because Im a black female.... When I was health director in Arkansas ... I could talk about teen-age pregnancy, about poverty, ignorance and enslavement and how the white power structure had imposed itonly because I was a black female. I mean, black people would have eaten up a white male who said what I did.

Health records should contain information from birth to present day. This is because something that happened to you when you were a child may still be relevant today. If you have an allergy to something, it is often essential that medical personal are aware of it, especially when you are in no condition to tell them. No one wants to think that this will happen to them, but it can and it does happen. It’s scary, but it is nice to know that the information in your health records could potentially save your life if you are in trouble.
Perhaps one good reason to ask to see a copy of your health records is to make sure the information is correct. You should never ask to have something removed because it embarrasses you though, as that information is there for your benefit. It might make a difference in how you are treated, or may help those treating you from making a mistake with their own health. When there is a chance that you may communicate something to someone else, that person should have that information before they proceed in treating you. They will still treat you, but they may have to take some extra precautions. The information contained within should be complete and accurate, even if there are some things that you would rather forget.
