Backyard Football

Every year at Christmas my family would play a game of backyard football if the weather was right. It was often just me and my cousins, but the adults would always end up watching us out the window once we got going. The problem each year was always the same. We would either get too cold to continue, or someone would get hurt. It was usually a lot of fun, but then always ended with someone having a fit about something. Such is family life, right?

Backyard football is a lot of fun if you can keep the game together. You might have more fun playing with friends. Families can have fun too, but there is always some underlying issue that pops up when playing. I know my cousins and I were very competitive for a very long time, and we couldn’t do anything without comparing ourselves to each other. This was the same with the backyard football games that we played. They were fun while they lasted.

 Historical Quote
You can’t be a Real Country unless you have A BEER and an airline—it helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a BEER.
—Frank Zappa (1940–1993)

When I got older, we no longer played backyard football on Christmas. Instead, I played with my friends in the summer and fall. I always had a lot of guy friends, so this meant I did a lot of guy stuff. I had a few brave girl friends that would play backyard football with us on occasion, but there were many times when I was the only one that wanted to play. I always enjoyed sports, and they were always really good at making sure I never got hurt. I was always great at catching the ball, so they always wanted me to play. I spent many weekends playing very long games of football. I wish I still had that kind of energy.

Backyard football is a lot of fun as long as you lay the rules down before you start. There’s nothing like a question about score or what is what during the game to bring it to a grinding halt. If the rules are laid out ahead of time, there won’t be any questions. If you don’t do this, most of your backyard football games are going to end in arguments, and won’t be a lot of fun. Most people like to use touch football rules for this type of game, and that might be best if you have girls and guys playing together. Some girls don’t mind tackles, but many won’t like it very much.
